Meet the Artist
Pradeep Mukherjee & Shamsher Khan
Pradeep Mukherjee, India’s first Miniature Phad Artist and recipient of the prestigious Shilp Guru Award, embraces the unconventional. He became the first outsider taken under the tutelage of the Joshi families of Bhilwara, the only ones specializing in Phad Painting for over two centuries. Between 1980 and 1982, he created a series of 108 Phad Paintings on Ramcharitmanas. Additionally, he painted the entire 292 shlokas of the Gita Govinda on a single cloth.
Currently residing in Udaipur, he collaborates with his student, Shamsher Khan, who has been under his guidance for the past twenty-five years. Shamsher, a recipient of State and National Merit Awards, shares Pradeepji’s passion for Phad.
Know more about the Art Form
Phad, a storytelling legacy passed down over generations for 700 years, originates in the Shahpura district, near Bhilwara, Rajasthan. Phad is a type of scroll painting that narrates elaborate religious stories of local deities and gods. Phad involves narrating, reading out, or singing a musical rendition from such paintings.
Created as a form of mobile temples, these traditional illustrations were carried by priest-singers of the Rabari tribe. The Bhopa and Bhopi community of nomads wandered from one place to another, singing such tales to villages. The painting would be unfolded after sunset, and the performance in front of village members would last into the night. Hence paintings are called ‘Phad’, which means ‘fold’ in the local dialect.
