Meet the Artist
Shyamlata Gahlot
For Shyamlata, arts has been her passion since childhood. She received the National Award in 2019 for her Koftgiri craft. She has researched in depth on Koftgiri, completed her PhD in it, and even authored various books. She fought for 7 years to get this art form a GI Tag.
Her grandparents were also in practising the art of Koftgiri, but she learnt this art form from her husband, and he was the one who got her interested in it.
She hails from the Marugar-Sikligar community from Kashmir, who are the pioneers of this art. Maru is a Mewari word, which means ‘maarne wale’. Sikligar was a title given to them by the Maharanas as they specialized in the craft of making and polishing weapons.
Passionate about preserving cultural heritage, she blends ancient techniques with contemporary themes and has showcased her work nationally and internationally. Additionally, she conducts workshops to educate aspiring artists, making her a prominent figure in the artistic community.
