Overview

Horn & Bone Work is a unique art of creating figures and characters by carving into animal bones. These bones are acquired by legal means once the animal is dead. It can result in the ornamentation of a bone, or the creation of an aesthetically pleasing figure as well as utility items. The artist, Jakir Hussain believes in drawing inspiration from his surroundings. You can see a lot of local gods, mythological characters and legends in his art. Be welcomed by master artist Jakir Hussain and together, save the art form that is on the brink of extinction.

This art form has been practised by a variety of world cultures, and since the ban on ivory, it has become a cheaper and legal substitute for it. The animal bone is collected from dead animals once the flesh has decomposed.

Did you know? The bones with the toughest make—like the hip and legs—are the ones usually used for handicraft purposes.

An art conservationist, Jakir Hussain is an artist in true character. He is hell-bent to protect, conserve and spread this dying art form. He is unabashed, honest and is inspired to carve on just pure bone, a skill much more difficult to master. Under Hussain’s mentorship, young men are encouraged to work with him and learn the art. They are awarded a monthly stipend which has helped him incredibly in preserving this art form. He has represented India in numerous art summits across the globe and also won the National Award in 2011.

Be a part of conserving whilst experiencing horn & born carving with award-winning master artist Jakir Hussain. Derive inspiration in his studio full of tools, references, raw materials and his finished pieces. Take home a souvenir and memories for life.
