Meet the Artist

Late Mohammed Ishaq

Late Chippa Mohammed Ishaq was a 3rd generation Tie and Dye artist, who practised this art for over 55 years. In recognition of his mastery, he was awarded the State Award in 2003-04. He promoted the preservation and spreading of the art by regularly teaching students and teachers from private as well as government institutes. The state-award winner master artist found inspiration in the studio which is filled with tools, references, raw materials as well as finished pieces.

Know more about the Art Form

Tie and Dye is native to the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat. It is believed that this technique of dyeing fabric began around Indus Valley Civilization when the Muslim Khatri community of Gujarat discovered it. Slowly and steadily, the art form entered the artistic lanes of Rajasthan and continued to flourish here. Rajasthan became the heart of Tie & Dye.

Tie and dye, or bandhani, is derived from Sanskrit word ‘bandh’, which means ‘to tie’. It is one of the most popular and widespread textile arts of India. Tie and dye is just as the name suggests: it involves the tying of the fabric, usually cotton or silk, with thread at certain points and then submerging it into colourful dyes to create a range of patterns. This practice ensures that no two tie-dyed clothes are the same, making each product truly one of a kind. There are over 8 different types of Tie & Dye techniques: namely Bandhej/ Bandhani, Tritik, Ikat, Shibori, Mudmee tie-dye, Lahariya, Adire, & Zha Ran.
