Meet the Artist
Vinod Jangid
Vinod Jangid is a third-generation sandalwood carving artist, having learnt the craft from his grandfather and now passing it on to his children. With a family legacy of over 100 years, he has dedicated his life to preserving and evolving this intricate art form. Vinod has received numerous accolades for his work, including the prestigious Shilp Guru Award in 2017, one of India’s highest honours for master artisans.
Among his most remarkable creations is a finely carved sculpture of a lady, intricately depicting scenes from royal folktales. His artworks have also reached international dignitaries, such as the sandalwood sitar gifted to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Know more about the Art Form
Sandalwood carving is one of the oldest and most refined forms of woodcraft in India, traditionally known for its delicate detailing, smooth texture, and the natural fragrance of the wood. The art form is believed to have originated in the southern regions of India, where sandalwood trees naturally grow. Historically, it was used to craft idols of deities, intricate decorative panels, and miniature sculptures, often commissioned for temples and royal courts. The fine fibre of sandalwood allows for exceptionally detailed carving, making it a prized medium among artisans.
Over time, this craft travelled north and found its place in Rajasthan, especially in the Jaipur region. In Rajasthan, sandalwood carving has been kept alive by a handful of artisan families, most notably from the Jangid community, who have been practising it for over a century. These artists have adapted the traditional techniques to create everything from miniature fans and keychains to complex narrative sculptures. Despite the scarcity of sandalwood in the state, their skill, innovation, and dedication have made Rajasthan a recognised centre for this intricate and heritage-rich craft.
