Meet the Artist
Ajay Rawat
Growing up in a village near Pushkar, Ajay Rawat first started playing with sand while his mother worked in the fields. What began as child’s play slowly turned into a deep passion. Over time, he chose to turn it into his life’s work. His Sand art reflects the spirit and culture of Rajasthan, often featuring local legends, traditional motifs, and larger-than-life figures.
A recipient of the President’s Award, he has showcased his talent at major events including the Orissa Sand Art Festival, Dubai Sand Art Festival, and the International Fair in Pushkar. One of his biggest sand art was a 25-foot-tall sculpture of Veer Shiromani Maharana Pratap, a work that tested his skill, patience, and dedication. Today, he continues to mesmerise audiences with his live sand art performances, especially during the International Sand Art Festival held near the Pushkar Mela.
Know more about the Art Form
Sand art is a unique and temporary form of artistic expression where dry or moist sand is used to create intricate designs, portraits, or large sculptures. It can take many forms — from delicate freehand drawings on flat surfaces using coloured sand to large-scale three-dimensional sculptures made with wet sand. Artists rely on precision, control, and patience, as the medium is fragile and every grain matters.
In India, sand art gained popularity on the beaches of Odisha, especially in Puri, where it evolved into a recognised art form. Over time, artists across the country, including Rajasthan, began using sand to tell stories, depict local culture, and showcase traditional themes in a new light. Whether it’s performed live or displayed at festivals, sand art continues to captivate audiences with its impermanence, creativity, and emotional impact.
