Meet the Artist
Mohan Lal Gurjar & Chanda Gujar
Mohan Lal Gujar is a traditional, extraordinary master craftsman in Leather Jutti (Mojari) craft. He was awarded Rajasthan State Award-2008 and National Merit Certificate in 2011 for his outstanding craftsmanship. He learned craftsmanship from his mother Chanda Gujar and chose this family work as a profession to earn a livelihood. Chanda Gujar herself earned the National award twice for the same and is a great example of women empowerment. For over 300 hundred years, their ancestors were making leather Mojari to fulfil the demands of the Royal family as well as the common folks.
Know more about the Art Form
Juttis have a great significance in India as the royalties wore them. Handmade Mojaris of Rajasthan and Punjab are very well known. Though the different regions have similar processes and materials, they have different designs, motifs and patterns to distinguish them from one another.
The craft of making hand made Jutti/Mojari is one with a traditional significance as it has been passed down from times long before ours. They are made using leather (from cow, camel buffalo etc. depending upon the region of production) and cotton threads, which are eco-friendly as well as strengthen the leather.
