About Kathputli / Puppetry

A Kathputli in India is a puppet show, often resembling some type of human, animal or mythical figure that is animated by a human called a puppeteer. The puppeteer uses movements of her hands, arms, or control devices such as rods or strings to move the body, head, limbs, of the puppet. The puppeteer often speaks in the voice of the character of the puppet.

We had a breathtaking and immersive cultural session at Papu’s workshop. He gave us an introduction to the story, background and making of puppets that further increased our interest in creating puppets for our own. We were there for 2 hours which just flew like in a jiffy as the experience was so amazing. We painted the puppets, and we love how we experience art and artistry in the process with the family. We were lucky enough that we got an opportunity to play local instruments together. Elated day spent! Strongly recommended for people who want to experience local culture!

I strongly recommend this puppetry experience hosted by Papu! He was a wonderful host, extremely knowledgeable about the art and a terrific storyteller. The puppet maker and his family who have been performing this art since a very young age were very friendly and welcoming. Besides painting the puppet, we were able to see different puppets, learned about the story of Dhola and Maaru and also tried to play traditional music that accompanies puppet shows. Thank you, Papu!

Please do not miss this thrilling opportunity to experience this age-old cultural art form. I was really happy as it is a hands-on experience and you get to make your puppet, which you can take home. The history and stories narrated through the beautiful puppets that you make from a pile of mango wood. The opportunity to make puppets dance was just out of the world. The hospitality was excellent. Bhatt is a wonderful host and looks after you well.

Did two hours session of puppetry with Papu Bhatt and it was just fantastic. He’s a great host and I was in awe after seeing his energy. He ensured that everything goes off as well as it could. As for this tour to Jaipur in particular, the puppets experience was amazing, and you’re taking up a session which is personally organized for us by the puppeteer and his family. Thanks for such a wonderful experience!

This was a once in a lifetime experience with Bhatt – he has an expert command in his craft, and displayed amazing puppetry skills. You could certainly sense a glimpse of how this royal state created their astonishing puppets and appreciate the dedication, skills and craftsmanship associated with it. It was enlightening to learn all of the various techniques he showed us, from making puppets from wood, painting, polishing and also make them dance. I would highly recommend this experience.

By far one of the best puppetry experiences we had in our life. Papu is not only a skilled artist but an exceptional host. He went all out to bring us closer to the world of the puppets. We went to his home were warmly received by his family. The highlight of the experience was when we got to make puppets dance with a lot of help from him. Overall, we had a more authentic and personalized way of exploring the city and got to see how the production and execution of puppets are done that changed our perspective and gave us a greater appreciation for the art and tradition.
