Metal Engraving is a highly skilled art form that requires a fair amount of patience and perseverance. Several practitioners of metal engraving reside in Rajasthan to create metal art like no one else. In the beautiful blue lanes of Jodhpur resides master artist Jagmohan Singh who will be your curator for this art experience.
Engraving is the practice of incising a design onto a hard, usually flat surface by cutting grooves into it with a burin. The result may be a decorated object in itself, as when silver, gold, steel, or glass are engraved, or may provide an intaglio printing plate, of copper or another metal, for printing images on paper as prints or illustrations. These images/prints are then called ‘engravings’. It is one of the oldest and most important techniques in printmaking.
Did you know? Many classic postage stamps were engraved, although the practice is now mostly confined to particular countries, or used when a more "elegant" design is desired and a limited amount of different colours is acceptable.
Jagmohan Singh is a state-awarded Master Engraver, who still engraves with hands rather than machines. Engraving is a legacy of his family, the roots of which go back to 400 years. Artist’s grandfather created the first RBI imprint on the Indian Rupee Note. He himself learnt this art from his father. He was awarded the State Award for his work in 2007-08.
