Meet the Artist

Papu Bhat

Papu Bhat is a successor of the Bhat community who have been making Kathputlis for centuries. He has represented this craft on various platforms and has also received a State award in 2012.

Know more about the Art Form

Native to Rajasthan and one of the most popular forms of Indian puppetry, Kathputli is more than a thousand years old. Also known as Putul in Bengal, Kathputli is an amalgamation of two words: Kath meaning wood and Putli meaning a doll with no life. Unique in its own way, the Rajasthani string puppeteers carve gorgeous and colorful puppets using wood and cloth.

Kathputli musical plays also portray the rich lives of kings and queens, sing folk ballads of Rajasthan and draw attention to the social problems like dowry system, women disempowerment, illiteracy, poverty, unemployment, and cleanliness as well as provide the solutions.
