10 Different Ways To Style A Saree

Introduction

I think we can all agree that ‘saree’ is an iconic outfit of Indian Culture. It holds the power to turn a girl next door into an artists muse. Saree has been in our culture for almost 6 centuries and women love to style a saree in different ways! This versatile outfit dates back to the 14th century when women started draping dhotis in a slightly different way.

As the country grew, so did the number of different ways to wear a saree. Each region had its own way of flaunting the beautiful saree, with different prints and ways of making it as well! Today, the saree has become a very versatile outfit and it’s no longer viewed as a strictly traditional outfit. The advent of modern fashion has led to numerous ways of making a saree look modern while keeping its individuality intact.

We have compiled a list of different modern ways to help you, show-off, a saree in a way that suits you the best!

Belt it up!

Originating from the traditional Maharashtrian ‘kamarbandh’, this style adds a zing to your outfit. This style is ideal for petite women as adding a belt to a saree is a great way to want to flaunt their curves! You can pair this saree with an off- shouldered blouse to add to the oomph of the saree.

Drape it on your neck!

Another modern twist to the saree is this fabulous style that requires the pallu of the saree to be draped in a thin layer around the neck, almost like a  dupatta. This style brings attention to your shoulders and collarbones. This chic style is ideal for tall women and can be paired with a full sleeve blouse with a deeper neck!

Live out your dream to become a mermaid:

You may have heard of a ‘mermaid style ballgown’ where the gown fits closely to the body especially the torso and hips, then  flares to the floor, similar to that of a ‘fishtail’. This style may look like it’s hard to achieve but all it takes is some placed pleats and tucks! This classic style is well suited for occasions like weddings or a reception where you can justify the amount of work this style takes!

Pair it with pants! :

Here’s a way to stand out at any event you attend! Style your saree (or a long dupatta) and drape it around a pair of churidars and a long blouse to complete your look! This style is a fashion statement in itself and lets your outfit do the talking for the night!

Class it up with a pallu:

The ‘front pallu’ style is elegant and grand. The style is the look for a special occasion where you need to set yourself apart from the rest. Make sure you choose a saree with a beautiful pallu, either embroidered or embellished ones. You can pair it with a simple blouse (the deep neck if you’re feeling bold enough!). This makes for a majestic outfit with a timeless charm attached to it!

Fly like a butterfly:

The butterfly draping style is a classic one that may give chubbier women a more form-fitting look. This one is easy to drape as it only requires you to make extra thin pleats of your pallu and pin it on your shoulders. This look would be enhanced if you used a silky fabric that defined your pleats like the opalescent wings of a butterfly.
